Though this is the most miniature museum in the state, it still hosts more than 5,000 visitors every year from around the world! This museum is an excellent place for kids and train lovers. The Laupahoehoe Train Museum provides a glimpse of railroad history on the Hawaiian Islands. The museum aims to preserve all special, cultural, academic, civil, and economic interests of the North Hilo and Hamakua districts. Most of the railroading information revolves around the Hilo Railroad which began in 1899 and lasted until 1946 when a devastating tsunami had irreparably destroyed tracks and facilities. The train museum is located in the old station agent's house and is furnished as it would have been in the early 1900s. The furnishings were restored and supplied by community residents themselves.
All visitors are welcome, but please make reservations. The Laupahoehoe Train Museum is located along Highway 19 near mile marker 25. Just follow the brown Hilo-Hamakua Heritage Corridor signs and look for the railroad crossing signs and the large red caboose in their front yard!
