Description:

This tiered garden on the grounds of Kona Outdoor Circle Educational Center was designed by architect Scott Seymour and named after his mother Sadie—a woman dedicated to the beautification of the community of Kona. With 11 tiers in total, each step features flora from different geographical locations—the first of which represents plants native to Hawaii. The other tiers showcase plants from New Zealand, Australia, Central America, Africa, Indo-Asia and Indonesia. Also of major interest is an archeological site on the grounds containing a 15th century Kealakowaʻa Heiau ("temple on the way for dragging canoes")—a place where canoes would be ritually blessed before being hauled to sea.
