Description:

The statue is placed on the landing site of Captain Cook's first expedition to the islands. He arrived in 1778, a year before his second and fateful return. The first visit was marked by friendship, feasting, and camaraderie with the natives although he was killed a year later by the same group of people. Even so, the natives remembered him for his virtues and this statue commemorates this mutual respect between them.
