King Kong Mountain

The World Famous King Kong Peak located on the northeastern coast of Kauai is part of the Anahola mountain range. You're most likely familiar with this location even if you have never been there! Movies such as "Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Six Days, Seven Nights" are only two of the many movies filmed in Kauai. Still, it wasn't until the release of 1976's "King Kong" that the Kalalea mountain became famously known as "King Kong" mountain because it resembles the head of that mighty movie ape. The mountain primarily includes two peaks - Hokualele peak and Mano mountain. Mano (meaning shark) is the second peak that sports a distinctive shark-fin-like appearance. The route to the top of King Kong mountain is not hikeable, but a few enterprising climbers have attempted it - it's an arduous climb not for the faint of heart. To access the Kalalea mountain, drive north from Kapaa on Highway 56. The mountain will be to your left past mile marker 14.
