Description:
The steel truss pieces for the historic and handsome Hanalei Bridge was prefabricated 5000 miles away in New York City from steel supplied by the famed Carnegie Steel Company. Construction for the bridge was completed in 1912. Spanning 113 feet across the Hanalei River, it’s the very first American-made, steel-constructed, through-truss bridge to be built in the Hawaiian Islands. The Hanalei bridge was unfortunately badly damaged by the 1957 tsunami, but it was quickly repaired and further reinforced against future gales. Today, the bridge is celebrated by locals for being the historic “gateway to Hanalei town.”
