Haleakala Observatory

Hawaii's first astronomical research observatory is situated in the perfect place - in the midst of a strange and wondrous field of cinder cones and solidified lava. The summit of Haleakala is above 1/3 of the Earth's troposphere which gives this observatory an excellent vantage point when viewing celestial bodies. Although the observatory is not open to the general public, you can see it from a distance.
