Makawao Union Church

This Gothic style stone church was built in 1917 when the original New England style wood-framed church (there since 1889) was razed a year before. Prior to being places of worship, a sugar mill stood on the site, and the current church is built upon its old foundations. Designed by architect Charles William Dickey, the church’s veneer is made of basalt lava rock, native to the area, while the roof is tiled with slate from Vermont. This beautiful structure was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. Also of interest: the church’s cemetery is the final resting place for actor Richard Denning of Hawaii Five-O and his wife, horror film actress Evelyn Ankers.
