Description:

The small cemetery of this quaint limestone church founded in 1864 in beautiful Kipahulu is most renowned for being the final resting place of legendary American aviator Charles Lindburg. A commemorative burial plaque (bearing the Biblical verse: “If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea…”) designed by Lindburg himself lies under the boughs of a Java plum tree. Although a very modest grave for a larger-than-life national hero, the tranquil setting is perfect for a man who spent his last days enjoying the simple life on Maui’s picturesque and peaceful Hana Coast. Also of interest—Linberg’s good friend Sam Pryor is buried in the same cemetery, and in between them are the graves of Pryor’s six beloved gibbons (small apes).
