Kaneana Cave

Like most lava rock caves on the islands, Kaneana Cave plays a large part in shaping ancient Hawaiian lore. In fact, this particular cave plays a major role, as ancient Hawaiians believed this to be the earth goddess’ womb, out of which all of mankind emerged. It’s also connected to a more sinister tale about a “shark man” (Nanue) who lived here and lured people inside in order to feast on them. 450 feet deep and 100 feet high, this lava tube cave is slippery wet and very dark, so make sure to bring good shoes a powerful flashlight if you plan to explore on the inside.
