Kuemanu Heiau

So you went to Hawaii intending to be the Big Kahuna, but you can't find those giant tubular waves! Head to this Heiau, which is dedicated to surfing. This sport originated from the Polynesian culture hundreds of years ago. A Heiau is a Hawaiian temple or sacred site, each one for a specific cause. While temples may once have stood on these Heiaus, they crumbled, and often the sacred foundations are left. This particular Heiau has only a stone foundation, with a nearby tidepool. It is adjacent to a surf break which makes this beach a popular spot for wave riders.
