This former banana plantation turned nature preserve and bird sanctuary was founded by former Senator Hiram Leong Fong, the first Asian-American to be elected to the U.S. Senate. Fong was fond of gardening, and up until his death at the age of 97, he never failed to tend to his garden on the weekends. Today, it’s a sprawling 700-acre natural haven populated with exotic and rare species of native plants protected from encroaching foreign species. Book a guided tour to recieve fascinating information about the plants and wildlife. What’s more, tour guides here are known to give visitors flowers and fresh fruit picked along the walk. Unsurprisingly, this beautiful location is popular with wedding and special event planners.
