Founded in 1854, Saint Augustine by-the-sea was the third parish to be established by the Hawaii Catholic Church—which, at that time, was a fledgling church which struggled from persecution during the Protestant Missionary period. Once known as the “church with no windows,” the parish has come a long way since its modest beginnings when it was built from coconut fronds and salvaged timber from wrecked sailing vessels. Today, it is a striking historical landmark built in the neo-Gothic style, celebrated for its finely crafted stained glass. Also on the grounds is the Damien Museum that houses artifacts related to Saint Damien of Moloka‘i, who is celebrated for his work at the Kalaupapa leprosy settlement.
