Mattoon's Original Burger King

There is no business connection to the franchise giant of the same name but this one was founded in 1952 when Gene and Betty Hoots decided to add a burger menu to the former Frigid Queen ice cream parlor. The name was registered in 1959 but Burger King had not expanded yet to Illinois. Thus, the name was allowed to remain on the building of this mom n' pop joint. The Hoots' restaurant even has some clout - no Burger King of multinational fame is allowed to set up shop within 20 miles of this family-owned eatery. Have a bite to eat and decide which one does a burger better.
