Description:
Born in 1918 when the average height of a man was less than 6 feet tall, Robert Wadlow stood a giant at 8 feet and 11.1 inches. His enormous height was caused by an overactive pituitary gland. He weighed 490 pounds by the time he was fully grown. Alton was his hometown and the city is very proud to be the birthplace of the tallest human being ever. He died of an infection from an erupting blister which was caused by a leg brace. This bronze statue is exactly his height so that people can know what it would be like to stand next to the tallest person in human history.
