A small, quiet town on the Des Moines River takes you back in time. Once known as Meeks Mill, it was founded in 1836 by William Meek. In 1841 the town was renamed "Bonaparte" and prospered around a wool and flour mill. Unique shops and boutiques, stately Victorian homes, and quaint cottages bring in visitors year after year. Buildings listed on the NRHP include Aunty Green Hotel, Bonaparte Pottery, Bonaparte School, and Lock & Dam System.
