Julien Dubuque, the French-Canadian settler of the late 1800s, and friend to the local Meskwaki tribe, mined lead in this area. He also married the daughter of the Meskwaki chief. When he died, the Meskwaki built him a log crypt. Afterwards, this stone monument was built to mark the grave. It sits high over above the Mississippi River.
