Amelia Earhart Earthwork

Atchison, Kansas, the hometown of Amelia Earhart, is the perfect setting for this farmland portrait of the famed aviator who disappeared in 1937 en route to the Howland Islands. Sixty years later in 1997, artist Stan Herd used permanent plants, stone, and other natural materials to construct his massive mosaic which can only be seen in its full glory from an aerial view. You don't need to be an aviator yourself to see it; simply head to the viewing deck on a nearby hilltop. (Submitted by Anthony Von Plinsky)
