Description:
The U.S. Army established Fort Scott in 1842 and 20 years later it became one of the main military posts for the Union in the Civil War. Because of its central location, it became a melting pot of sorts - a place where people of all backgrounds sought refuge in an unstable era. As such, this is where the historic 1st Kansas Colored Infantry Unit got its start. The park is open year-round but check the website for seasonal hours. Also, check out their events calendar for Civil War reenactments.
