A pretty, 3-mile stretch of beach encompasses three towns and is stunning in the summer or winter. Warm days bring throngs of travelers strolling the pier, riding roller coasters or frolicking on the sandy shores. Wintertime and early spring are less busy, but no less beautiful, characterized by fragile layers of snow juxtaposed with the waves gently rolling in. Its unique, briny beauty made an appearance in Stephen King's novel, "Thinner". Officially settled in 1653, Old Orchard Beach is known for the seaside park Palace Playland and cozy bed-and-breakfasts. (Submitted by Stacy Botzos)
