Description:

This fort was for a long time the only structure defending Washington, D.C. The originally named Fort Warburton was destroyed in 1812 by its own garrison when British troops were advancing on it. The new Fort Washington defended the nation's capital during the Mexican War and the Civil War. The site has a lighthouse looking out on the Potomac River which is still in operation today.
