Danvers State Insane Asylum

Even though the word "asylum" is meant to invoke a feeling of safety, it always invokes feelings of dread and fear when attached to a hospital. Take Danvers - opened in 1878 when mental illnesses were treated in abominable ways. It's no wonder that every abandoned asylum is said to be haunted - they weren't places of refuge but places of torture and maltreatment. Danvers, closed in the 1990s, served as the backdrop for the horror flick "Session 9" as well as the inspiration for Gotham City's Arkham.
