Description:

The U.S. Custom House in Salem, Massachusetts, was built in 1819 during the height of Salem’s maritime prosperity and served as the center of customs operations for one of America’s busiest ports. Merchants arriving from around the world paid duties here, helping fund the young federal government, while famed author Nathaniel Hawthorne later worked in the building as Surveyor of the Port, an experience that inspired the introduction to The Scarlet Letter. Today, the landmark is part of the Salem Maritime National Historic Site and is recognized for its striking Federal-style architecture and iconic rooftop eagle carved by local craftsman Joseph True.
