Description:

The Mackinac Bridge, connecting Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas, opened to traffic on November 1, 1957, after three years of construction. At nearly five miles long, it was the world’s longest suspension bridge between anchorages at the time, earning the nickname “Mighty Mac.” Its creation fulfilled decades of dreams for a reliable year-round crossing, replacing the often treacherous ferry service across the Straits of Mackinac.
