The Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis, MN holds the distinction of being the first basilica established in the United States. Its construction began in 1907 under the direction of Archbishop John Ireland and was completed in 1915. Designed by architect Emmanuel Louis Masqueray, the basilica's architecture is a stunning example of Beaux-Arts style, featuring grand domes and intricate detailing. In 1926, Pope Pius XI elevated the church to the status of a basilica, recognizing its importance to the Catholic community.
