The Lake Superior Zoo in is Duluth, Minnesota faced closing in 2015 but remains open. Bessie the elephant was the zoo's very first attraction in 1937. She was 12 when she arrived and she died in 1974 at the age of 49. The zoo features hundreds of native animals and exotic species, plus exhibits, educational programming, camps, and party rentals.
