Description:
About 10,000 years ago, the River Warren Falls moved upstream to the junction of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers, splitting into two falls, one of which became St. Anthony Falls, named by Father Hennepin in 1680. Known to the Dakota as mnirara (curling waters) or owahmenah (falling waters), the falls drew explorers and settlers in the 1700s and 1800s, powering numerous lumber and flour mills. From 1860 to 1887, the falls suffered damage due to overuse and poor engineering, but the US Army Corps of Engineers stabilized them in 1937.
