Description:
The Stillwater Lift Bridge, built in 1931, spans the St. Croix River connecting Stillwater, Minnesota, and Houlton, Wisconsin, and features six steel Parker truss spans, one vertical lift span, and three concrete approach spans. Designed by J.A.L. Waddell and John Lyle Harrington, the bridge is notable for its vertical-lift mechanism, a rare type with only a few examples remaining in Minnesota and Wisconsin from before World War II. The bridge, with its Classical Revival concourse, is an important part of the Stillwater Cultural Landscape District and showcases the engineering legacy of its designers.
