Description:

Sugar beets were first cultivated in 1918, with the inaugural sugar beet factory opening in East Grand Forks, Minnesota, in 1926. Over the subsequent 50 years, five additional factories were established in the Red River Valley, including Moorhead and Crookston in Minnesota, and Drayton, Hillsboro, and Wahpeton in North Dakota. Today, sugar beets are grown on more than 500,000 acres in the Red River Valley, representing approximately 57 percent of the total sugar beet acreage in the United States. To honor the significant impact of sugar beets on agriculture, Halstad, Minnesota, proudly hosts the World's Largest Sugar Beet!
