Description:

Emerald Mound is an archaeological site from the Plaquemine culture of the Mississippian period, located on the Natchez Trace Parkway. Dating from 1200 to 1730 CE, it later became the main ceremonial center for the Natchez people. As the second-largest Pre-Columbian earthwork in the United States, only surpassed by Monk's Mound in Cahokia, Illinois, Emerald Mound holds significant historical value. The National Park Service stabilized the site in 1955 and it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1989.
