Educational, beautiful, and alongside great beaches, this fort is best accessed by an hour-long boat ride. The grounds are closed during the winter but available to the public the other three seasons. Built on Ship Island, the fort has defended the country since 1859. It has withstood not only the violence of war but also the destruction of Mother Nature - coming out of Hurricanes Camille and Katrina in one piece.
