Description:
The Civil War was not only fought on land but on water too. USS Cairo not only served in the Civil War but was also one of the first of her type built - an iron-clad warship. In 1962, she was sunk - and remained preserved in silt and sand until her discovery in 1956. Lifting her out proved no easy task and finally she brought to her final resting place on several barges, thereafter reassembled and displayed.
