Description:

By the time this old prison closed it was the oldest operating prison west of the Mississippi. Opened in 1836, the Jefferson City Big House finally closed in 2004. Now a place for sightseeing the prison's website homepage opens with this greeting: "The Bloodiest 47 Acres in America." Now that is a landmark worth seeing.
