Description:

Of the 23 dome kilns built only three have been restored with the rest left to be reclaimed by nature. These operated from 1884 to 1900 and were used to burn trees for charcoal which was then used to smelt ore. There are numerous interpretive signs to educate visitors. The site has good walking paths for exploring the park and the kilns. To get there from Melrose, Montana turn onto Trapper Creek Road. The road is only paved as far as the Salmonfly Fishing Access. It quickly becomes a good gravel road. Follow the road for 5.5 miles. Next, turn right and follow Canyon Creek Road for 5.6 miles.
