Description:
It was named for Comet Mine which produced lead, zinc, copper, silver, and gold. The town enjoyed prosperity from 1883 to its closure in 1941 when the ore was exhausted. As one can imagine there was a lot of toxic pollution caused by the mining and extraction of the metals, thus a huge reclamation project was undertaken in 1997. Only one active residence is reportedly in existence in Comet; otherwise the town has been abandoned. From I-15 S take exit 160 for High Ore Rd. Turn right onto High Ore Rd. and travel for about 4.6 miles. Continue onto Wickes Rd. and you'll see the ghost town on your left-hand side.
