Nicknamed "Quake Lake" this body of water was formed when an earthquake hit in 1959. Measuring 7.5, the seismic event was so violent it created an upheaval of the entire landscape. Now very tranquil, the area is a favorite spot for visitors. For a full history of the area, go to the visitor center which is open from May to September between 10 AM and 6 PM on most of those days. If you visit in the off-season there are plenty of interpretive signs that explain the tragic history behind Quake Lake.
