In honor of the legendary mountain men, the town of Wilsall, Montana proudly erected a statue in the Shields River Valley along U.S. Route 89. Crafted by a talented local artist named Gary Kerby, the sculpture stands as a lasting tribute. The task of naming the statue was bestowed upon a first-grade class from the community who chose the name "Thunder Jack." Positioned above the scenic Shields River, this majestic statue gazes upon the waterway, which received its name from Captain William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. In a gesture of appreciation towards John Shields, a member of their party, Captain Clark named the river after him.
