Description:

"Who was Elwood Stokes?" you ask. Well, he was the first president of the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association in 1869. You reply, "What exactly is that?" The OGCMA, although only known in Ocean Grove, was instrumental in making the small community on Jersey Shore a success. Stokes was responsible for improving the infrastructure of OG such as drilling fresh water wells, building a sewage system, and installing electric lights. Because of his contributions he is known as the "Father of Ocean Grove." His likeness sits on a pedestal bearing his name in front of the Great Auditorium on Ocean Pathway.
