The 20-acre Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange, New Jersey is part of the Essex County Park System situated on the South Mountain Reservation. The zoo was founded in 1963 and originally featured New Jersey indigenous animals only but now includes animal species from every continent except Antarctica. The zoo houses around 700 animals (as of 2012) including a free flight bird aviary. The zoo is open all year round.
