In 1898, Alameda Park Zoo in Alamogordo, New Mexico, was founded. The zoo claims to be the oldest zoo in SW New Mexico which participates in the Mexican Wolf Species Survival Plan. The zoo also is a rescuer of injured birds of prey where after they are healed they are released back into the wild or kept at the zoo if appropriate. Some special exhibits at the zoo include the lemur exhibit, the butterfly garden, and the birds of prey exhibit.
