Description:
The Aztec Ruins National Monument in actuality isn't Aztec at all. The site preserves Ancestral Puebloan structures, not Aztec. More Puebloan structures lie a short distance south. The buildings date back to the 11th to 13th century but early American mid-19th century settlers assumed the structures were of Aztec design. The National Monument was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 15, 1966.
