El Morro National Monument is a historic and natural site located near Ramah, NM. The monument is situated on a massive sandstone bluff, also known as "Inscription Rock," that rises 200 feet above the surrounding desert landscape. The sandstone cliffs at El Morro are covered with hundreds of inscriptions, some of which date back over 2,000 years. These inscriptions tell the stories of the people who passed through the area, including travelers, soldiers, explorers, and settlers. Some of the most famous inscriptions were left by Spanish conquistadors, including Juan de Onate who inscribed his name in the rock in 1605. (Submitted by Louise C)
