Valley of Fires Lava Fields

The Valley of Fires lava fields are on a ridge of Dakota sandstone which overlooks a large expanse of lava that extends to low hills for over 10 miles. This ridge is a just a small portion of the land before the eruption which remained high enough to stay uncovered. The volcanic activity responsible occurred between 1,500 and 5,000 years ago. The lava has become overgrown with grass and appears green rather than black. There are 19 well equipped campsites in the area with tables, grills, drinking water, and metal shelters, and some with electric hookups.
