Description:

This was the first mental facility in America to be privately owned instead of government-run. In 1934 the cost of a room was $754 per month which would have been prohibitively expensive even for well-to-do people. The opulent sanitorium once treated Zelda Fitzgerald but due to the high cost she was moved to another facility in North Carolina where she perished in a fire. Today the sanitorium is in mint condition down to the furniture still remaining. Yet it is still imbued with a sense of gloom, an imprint left over from its long history of treating the mentally ill.
