Description:

This rural cemetery in Kings County, NY was founded in 1838 when rapid urbanization meant churchyard cemeteries were becoming quite overcrowded. The Green-Wood Cemetery was so popular that it inspired a competition to design a "Central Park" for NYC who's winners basically inspired the creation of Central Park and Prospect Park. The gates of Green-Wood Cemetery were designated a New York landmark in 1966 and the cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. It was also granted National Historic Landmark status in 2006 by the U.S. Department of the Interior.
