Description:

This island is known as the home of "Typhoid Mary" which was the worst loss of life in New York's history until September 11, 2001. The island was uninhabited until 1885. The city purchased the island to build a hospital to treat people suffering from contagious diseases such as typhus, tuberculosis, yellow fever, and smallpox. But the island's most famous resident was "Typhoid Mary" Mallon. She was the first person who carried the bacteria that caused typhoid fever.
