They've been there for years but, since 2005, a group of people became dedicated to find homes for cats abandoned on the island. The Wildlife Freedom Foundation now operates a small shelter on Roosevelt Island's southern end in the ruins of Renwick Smallpox Hospital. Only cats are allowed in the structure but that soon will change after the building becomes reinforced!
