Secret Caverns

The Howe (Secret) Caverns were discovered in 1928 by a pair of curious cows who happened into the caverns only to take a fatal trip to the bottom of an 85-foot deep hole. This alerted their owners of the caves' existence. This opened exploration of that hole which uncovered that it was connected to a series of underground chambers which culminated in a chamber that featured a tall subterranean waterfall! The caves were opened to the public in 1929 even though visitors would have to climb down a 30 foot rope and squeeze through a tight tunnel to get inside. The cave trip is much improved these days with metal walkways and ladders that make the journey into and through the caves a touch easier.
