Description:

The Obelisk, often called Cleopatra’s Needle, stands proudly in Central Park near the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Despite its nickname, it has no direct connection to Cleopatra—it dates back over 3,000 years to the reign of Pharaoh Thutmose III in ancient Egypt. The obelisk was gifted to the United States by Egypt in 1881 and transported to New York in a remarkable engineering feat. Made of red granite and standing about 69 feet tall, it’s the oldest man-made monument in the city and serves as a striking link between ancient history and modern urban life.
