Description:
Completed in 1861, this mansion is a marvelous representation of the antebellum architectural style. The history is also representative of the antebellum period, although not so marvelous. This was a plantation, fully operational with slave labor before the Civil War. Now a museum, the mansion shows the daily lives of the Bellamy family as well as the enslaved people who attended to their needs. The former slaves' quarters were restored in recent years to show the meager conditions they endured just a few feet away from their masters who lived in comfort and luxury.
