The North Carolina Zoo encompasses over a thousand acres, some of which are allotted to its renowned Africa exhibit. Mimicking an African savanna, this grasslands area is home to a herd of African elephants, chimpanzees, and lions - to name a few. The elephants, after being observed by researchers for several months, formed their own herd - an amazing occurrence given that it is very difficult to integrate adult elephants into a cohesive group. This zoo is convenient for out-of-town visitors; it is open 364 days out of the year.
